Text Box: A major Nor’ Easter struck the state of New Jersey from February 11th into the 12th bringing periods of intense heavy snow, gusty winds and whiteout conditions.
Snow developed from South to North late in the afternoon on the 11th between 2 and 5 PM. The temperature at the onset was slightly above freezing (33-36 degrees). However, the snow gradually became steadier during the evening hours and all areas dropped below freezing. Overnight into the 12th, winds increased and became gusty out of the North which continued to drop temperatures through the 20’s. The heaviest snow came towards daybreak (4 - 9 AM) in very intense bands which moved from the Northwest across the Northern half of the state. In addition to these bands of heavy snow, winds increased out of the North with gusts of 20 to 40 mph. The hardest hit areas were from Northern Middlesex up through Bergen county where these bands produced heavy snow with accumulation rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour as well as white out conditions due to excessive blowing and drifting. All snow came to an end between 2 and 5 PM with continued blowing and drifting snow through much of the evening.
